The Kitui County Ministry of Health and Sanitation, under the leadership of County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Ruth Koki, has successfully saved the life of Elizabeth Mwikali David, a 19-year-old from Ulonzo Village, Miambani Ward, who suffered a severe haemorrhage secondary to a retained placenta.

Health officials confirmed that both the mother and her newborn are now stable, thanks to the swift intervention by the newly formed County RMNCAH (Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health) Emergency Response Team. The new emergency response unit represents a game-changer in maternal and newborn care, especially in rural areas where delays in accessing advanced medical services often prove fatal.

Mwikali’s life was saved through the use of a Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (NASG) a green garment used during emergency referrals to direct blood from the lower body toward vital organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and brain, thereby preventing shock and organ failure caused by excessive blood loss.

Sources told Hopkin Digital that “the mother and her baby from Miambani are alive and stable today Kitui’s healthcare is saving lives.”

Elizabeth Mwikali also underwent a blood transfusion, which played a key role in stabilizing her condition during referral and treatment. Thanks to the well-trained nurses skilled in managing postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), both mother and baby are now safe and recovering well.

This successful rescue underscores Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes across the county. Through his prioritization of health services, Governor Malombe has ensured that all essential medical equipment, including lifesaving tools like the NASG, are available in county facilities a clear demonstration that his administration is delivering on the Kitui Promise.

The County Government reiterated its commitment to strengthening maternal and newborn health services to ensure that no mother or child is lost due to preventable complications.
