The Principal Secretary in the State Department for Correctional Services, Dr. Salome Beacco, on Thursday led officers and staff in planting more than 4,000 tree seedlings at Kitui GK Prison as part of the government’s ambitious 15 Billion Trees Initiative aimed at increasing the country’s forest cover and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The exercise brought together prison warders and correctional services officers who participated in the environmental conservation campaign under the department’s monthly tree-planting programme, where every first Thursday of the month is dedicated to tree planting and nurturing activities. The correctional services department has reportedly set a target of producing 100 million trees by the year 2032 in support of the national reforestation agenda.

Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Beacco urged officers within the correctional services department to uphold high standards of professionalism and remain committed to serving the public diligently. She also assured officers that the government was working towards addressing challenges affecting staff in the correctional services sector.

“The journey towards achieving the 15 billion tree target requires collective effort, consistency and unwavering commitment. This is achievable as we commit to remain focused, united and determined,” said the PS.
