Ikanga Kyatune MCA Cyrus Sonko has strongly condemned the state of affairs in the Kitui County Assembly, citing a breakdown in its core functions. According to Sonko, the Assembly is under complete capture, rendering it almost incapacitated and unable to effectively perform its oversight, representation, and legislative roles. His remarks come in the wake of heightened tensions within the Assembly, where Speaker Kinengo Katisya’s leadership has been increasingly criticized for disregarding standing orders and stifling members’ contributions.

Sonko, who was recently elected as the Deputy Majority Whip in the Assembly, expressed concern over the Speaker’s alleged attempt to divide the Assembly along political party lines. He stated that as MCAs, they remain committed to supporting Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe in delivering his mandate to the people of Kitui. He emphasized that moving forward, they want a unified government that works for the benefit of all residents rather than being derailed by political divisions.
The latest incident saw the Speaker order the forceful removal of Matinyani MCA Sylvester Munyalo from the chamber, sparking a violent confrontation. In the ensuing melee, a senior Sergeant-at-Arms lost several teeth after being caught in the scuffle. Sonko warned that Speaker Katisya must either toe the line or face impeachment, reminding him that MCAs are his bosses and were the ones who voted him into office. The chaos has intensified calls for urgent reforms in the Assembly, with many MCAs determined to take drastic action if the Speaker continues to defy standing orders and hinder legislative operations.
