Alpha New Beginnings Foundation to Launch Africa’s First Holistic Prison Syllabus at Kitui Women’s Prison

Alpha New Beginnings Foundation, through its Enablement Programme, is set to launch the Early Years Developmental Center (EYDC) and unveil what it describes as Africa’s first Holistic Prison Syllabus designed for children living in prison with their mothers, their siblings, and children from the surrounding community.

The groundbreaking initiative, developed by Prof. Dr. Sheila Kalunga, a specialist in neuroscience, mental health, social inclusion, child development, and human behaviour, seeks to ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has access to quality early childhood development. Guided by the principle that “Every Child’s Right” is to receive nurturing care, education, and opportunities to reach their full potential, the programme aims to transform early learning for children in vulnerable settings.

Unlike conventional early childhood programmes, the EYDC curriculum adopts a holistic approach that integrates education, mental health, and life skills. The syllabus features martial arts to build discipline, confidence, focus, and physical fitness, integrated Mathematics and English to strengthen foundational learning, trauma-informed child psychology to support emotional well-being and healing, and play, arts, and crafts to nurture creativity, social interaction, and motor development.

Speaking exclusively to Hopkin Digital, Prof. Kalunga said the programme is designed to break barriers that have historically denied vulnerable children access to quality early learning opportunities. “Children living in prison with their mothers deserve the same opportunities for growth and development as every other child. This is more than an education programme; it is a commitment to restoring dignity, promoting inclusion, and giving every child the opportunity to thrive regardless of where they begin in life,” she said.

The official launch will take place on 11 July from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Kitui Women’s Prison, bringing together stakeholders, development partners, prison officials, and child development advocates. Organisers say the initiative marks a significant milestone in advancing early childhood development, mental health, and social inclusion, while setting a new benchmark for supporting some of Africa’s most vulnerable children through innovative, rights-based programming.
