On Tuesday 8th July 2025, Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe delivered the 2025 State of the County Address with a strong focus on the impressive gains made under his administration. Speaking at the Kitui County Assembly chambers, the governor underscored the successful implementation of transformative projects and programmes across all 40 wards and 247 villages. “In just two years and ten months, my government has so far implemented a total of 1,921 infrastructural projects and programmes. Out of these, 989 were carried out under the Community Level Infrastructure Development Programme (CLIDP) – a key initiative we developed during my first tenure to promote equitable development, reduce poverty, and uplift livelihoods at the grassroots,” he stated.
Among the key highlights was the significant progress made in the health sector, particularly in improving maternal and child healthcare services. The number of operational maternity units has grown from 81 in 2022 to 99 in 2025, a move that aims to ensure more mothers can access safe delivery services closer to home. Governor Malombe emphasized that improving access to quality healthcare remains a top priority for his administration.
He further revealed that the county has established 70 new neonatal units, which has led to a major drop in infant mortality—from 70 to 30 deaths per 1,000 live births. Additionally, the county government has supported specialized care by providing treatment and assistance to 12 patients diagnosed with hemophilia bleeding disorders. These achievements reflect deliberate efforts to expand both general and specialized healthcare across Kitui County.
The governor also outlined ongoing healthcare infrastructure reforms, including the rationalization of ICU and HDU units to meet Level 4 hospital standards. The county has also worked to revive previously non-operational health facilities and restructure medical supply systems to ensure consistent access to drugs and equipment. Looking ahead, he pledged to prioritize sustainable funding for the health sector and continue strengthening the county’s healthcare delivery system for the benefit of all residents.
