Farmers in Machakos County are set to benefit from a countywide programme that will see the distribution of free certified seeds ahead of the planting season. The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Wavinya Ndeti, is aimed at boosting food production and cushioning smallholder farmers from the rising cost of agricultural inputs.

The programme will be officially launched on March 3, 2026, at Kathaana Market in Kangundo West Ward, marking the beginning of a broader rollout across various sub-counties. County officials say the exercise targets thousands of farmers, particularly those in arid and semi-arid areas, who often struggle to access quality planting materials.

According to the county government, the distribution of certified seeds is expected to improve both the quality and quantity of farm produce. Agricultural experts note that certified seeds have higher germination rates, are disease-resistant, and offer better yields compared to uncertified varieties, factors that could significantly enhance food security in the region.
The initiative is anchored on the county’s development agenda dubbed “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni,” which seeks to ensure food is available at the household level while increasing farmers’ incomes. Governor Ndeti has consistently maintained that agriculture remains a key pillar of Machakos’ economy and a critical driver of sustainable development.

Leaders and residents have welcomed the move, terming it timely as farmers prepare their land for planting. If successfully implemented, the programme is expected to strengthen livelihoods, stimulate rural economies, and further position Machakos as a growing agricultural hub in Kenya.
