Residents of Makindu township in Kibwezi West Constituency have criticized Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr over what they termed as disregard for gender equality laws following the removal of Agriculture Executive Committee Member Elizabeth Muli from office.

Speaking to journalists after staging peaceful demonstrations in Makindu town, the locals demanded that the governor come clean on the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of Ms. Muli. They described the move as a “sham” and an embarrassment to women in Makueni County, arguing that the decision appeared to be driven by personal vendetta rather than accountability, raising concerns over gender discrimination in county leadership.

The residents defended the former CECM, describing her as a hardworking leader whose contributions had significantly improved early childhood education in the county. They noted that during her tenure in the ICT docket, Ms. Muli spearheaded the automation of county revenue systems and played a key role in strengthening the ECDE sector. Under her watch, 358 ECDE teachers were confirmed to permanent and pensionable terms in January 2024, followed by another 453 in July the same year, fulfilling a pledge by the county government to improve the welfare of ECDE teachers.

They further stated that despite her short stint in the agriculture docket, Ms. Muli had already made notable strides, including reviving the long-stalled Makueni Agricultural Show and initiating partnerships aimed at reviving the Makindu grain factory to support value addition for farmers in the region. Residents urged the county leadership to uphold fairness and transparency in public appointments and dismissals.
